The November 2022 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

  • Rose 1.4% month-on-month.
  • Rose 7.7% compared with November 2021.

Concurrent seasonal adjustment reinstated

An extraordinary annual seasonal review (EASR) process was undertaken this month. The outcome of the review has seen concurrent seasonal adjustment reinstated for all Retail Trade series. Revisions arising from the annual review are generally minor, however, for some series and months there are significant revisions. To understand more about these changes, please read the survey impacts and changes section below.

As advertised, all information for the November 2022 reference period has been released in one issue on 11 January 2023. All timeseries spreadsheets have been published, including; state by industry results, state by industry sub-group results, quarterly turnover volumes, and online sales.

Subsequent issues will return to the dual release format.

Analysis by industry

Food retailing

Food retailing rose 0.1% ($17.1m) in November, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Household goods retailing

Household goods retailing rose 2.1% ($130.9m) in November, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing rose 6.4% ($193.0m) in November, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Department stores

Department stores rose 5.4% ($104.0m) in November, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Other retailing

Other retailing rose 1.1% ($61.7m) in November, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services rose 0.1% ($2.6m) in November, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Online retailing

Total online retailing sales were $4,015.0m in November 2022, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Seasonally adjusted online sales rose 13.0 per cent ($461.6m), following a fall of 0.5 per cent (-$18.3m) in October 2022. Original sales in November 2022 grew by 25.6 per cent with the increasing popularity of Black Friday driving the rise. In November 2021 original sales grew at a smaller rate of 5.4 per cent, as online sales in the months preceding November 2021 were already at elevated levels due to the Delta outbreak.

Seasonally adjusted through-the-year sales are up 6.3 per cent ($238.1m).

In November 2022, food online sales were $1,078.8m, and non-food online sales were $2,936.2m, in seasonally adjusted terms. There were rises in both non-food sales, up 15.7 per cent ($399.1m), and food sales, up 6.2 per cent ($62.5m).

In original terms, the proportion of online non-food retailing sales to total non-food retailing rose from 16.7 per cent to 19.4 per cent. The proportion for online food retailing sales to total food retailing rose from 5.6 per cent to 5.8 per cent.

In original terms, the proportion of online sales to total retailing rose from 10.7 per cent in October 2022 to 12.6 per cent in November 2022. In November 2021 this proportion was 12.5 per cent. November traditionally has strong online sales due to Black Friday.

The dual release format will resume next month with the December 2022 reference period release, with Tables 1 to 4 available on 31 January 2023, prior to Tables 5 to 23 which will be made available on 6 February 2023.
