Food retailing

Food retailing fell 0.1% (-$20.9m) in April, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Household goods retailing

Household goods retailing fell 1.0% (-$56.6m) in April, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing rose 1.9% ($57.1m) in April, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Department stores

Department stores rose 1.5% ($29.2m) in April, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Other retailing

Other retailing was relatively unchanged 0.0% ($0.7m) in April, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services fell 0.2% (-$12.4m) in April, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Online retailing

Total online retailing sales were $3,729.9m in April 2023, in seasonally adjusted terms. Seasonally adjusted online sales fell 1.3 per cent (-$49.0m), following a fall of 3.0 per cent (-$118.3m) in March 2023. Seasonally adjusted through-the-year sales are up 0.2 per cent ($7.3m).

Original sales in April 2023 fell by 7.2 per cent (-$262.2m).

In April 2023, food online sales were $1,061.3m and non-food online sales were $2,668.5m in seasonally adjusted terms. Food sales fell 1.7 per cent (-$17.9m) whilst non-food fell 1.2 per cent (-$31.2m).

In original terms, the proportion of online food retailing sales to total food retailing fell from 5.7 per cent to 5.3 per cent. The proportion for online non-food retailing sales to total non-food retailing fell from 16.6 per cent to 16.1 per cent.

In original terms, the proportion of online sales to total retailing fell from 10.5 per cent in March 2023 to 10.0 per cent in April 2023. This proportion is the lowest since April 2022, when online sales also made up 10.0 per cent of total retailing sales.

Tables 5 through to 23 have been made available on 1 June 2023. This includes March 2023 quarterly results for consumer sales of energy retailing and communications services. Tables 1 through to 4 remain unchanged from their release on 26 May 2023.

01/06/2023 - As advertised in the main release of this publication on 26 May 2023, the time series spreadsheets for tables 5 through to 23 are now available under the Data Downloads section. This includes:

  • April monthly results for State by Industry Subgroup, Completely Enumerated (large) and Sample (small) businesses, and Online Retail Turnover. 
  • March quarter 2023 results, available in tables 5 through to 10. These results have been published previously. 
  • March quarter 2023 results for consumer sales of energy retailing and communications services.

In addition, an online retailing section has been added to this publication, which shows the most-up-to-date online retail sales.
